Hancher Law Office is based in the small, but growing, town of Zelienople, a suburb just 28 miles north of Pittsburgh. Located a few blocks from the newly revitalized Main Street at 101 North Green Lane, the office occupies what is known as the Bastian House.
The house was built in 1858 by William McKinley Bastian for $4,100. Bastian was a machine maker and hotel keeper and business man who sold farming machinery including a “four horse power” model he invented. Bastian also built Zelienople’s first hotel with a tavern on site of the present Kaufman Tavern. David Bastian, the youngest of the Bastian children, later lived in the house pursuing his avocation of taxidermy showing his collections in an elaborate natural setting in the “showroom” and welcomed schoolchildren and others at no charge.
The house is owned and beautifully maintained by the office founder, George H. Hancher. Mr. Hancher purchased the property in 1970 and worked diligently to restore it to its current glory. The Hancher family hopes to retain this beautiful building for many years to come.
